During the day, volunteers asked Sainsbury’s shoppers if they would like to buy an item of food from a shopping list to donate after completing their shop.

The collection achieved with more than 1,200kgs of non-perishable food, which will be used to provide emergency supplies for local people in crisis.

Potential recipients are identified by front-line professionals and are given a voucher, which is exchanged for three days of food (nine meals) at the foodbank in Sussex Road.

In the two years since opening its doors in April 2012, the foodbank has helped over 2,200 local people, 40 per cent of whom are children, and it has provided more than 20,000 meals.

A spokesperson for the foodbank said: “Our community continues to show its concern for local issues and especially for local people in crisis.

“The support is exceptional and we want to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone once again for their kindness, including Sainsbury’s and all its staff for their help”.
