Get ready for Bexhill Roaring 20s

Bexhill will be transported back in time to the age of the Charleston and Prohibition tomorrow (Saturday, July 23) as the Roaring 20s festivities get under way.

The annual event kicks off in the morning with 1066 Rollerdance performing 1920s inspired routines from 11am.

East Sussex School of Performing Arts will also be performing 1920s songs and dances from noon.

Other entertainment includes Cinque Ports Lindy Tappers from 1.30pm and Debonnaire Entertainment from 2pm, the Charleston dancers performings songs from 1920s shows. Masai warriors from Kenya are also performing their traditional dance throughout the day. At 3pm, 20s stuntmen will take visitors back to the Prohibition era with stunts only normally seen in movies.

The highlight will be Bexhill’s attempt to reclaim the world record for the Largest Charleston Dance. Bexhill smashed it at last year’s event, with 503 people shimmying their way into the record books.

But last October, the record was broken, with 977 people dancing in the streets of Spitalfields in east London. Debonnaire Entertainment will be leading the way tomorrow as Bexhill aims to reclaim its record.

Throughout the day there are vintage motorcycles on display in East Parade, dating from 1915 to 1932. Bexhill 100 Motoring Club is also displaying vintage cars from the war memorial to Sackville Lawns.

Steam cars and veterans will also be parading along the seafront.

Sir Malcolm Campbell’s record-breaking water speed Blue Bird will be on display on Sackville Lawns.

Organiser Roger Crouch said: “We are looking forward to a lovely day once again and attempting the Charleston world record. There are a lot of things planned throughout the day.

“There will also be Charleston workshops from 10am for those wanting to take part. We will be attempting to beat the world record at 1pm at the De La Warr. But above all, it’s about having fun.”
