Get ready for the 33rd Hastings Half Marathon

The annual Hastings Half Marathon kicks off this Sunday (March 19), with thousands of runners expected to participate and throngs of spectators to cheer them on.

The event, which is now in its 33rd year, gets under way from Sea Road, St Leonards, at 10.30am.

The Saga Insurance sponsored Mini Run for children aged nine to 16 will also take place during the main event, starting at 10.45am from approximately 200 metres west of Hastings Pier.

Scores of charities will be represented at this year’s half marathon race and there is plenty of entertainment around the course to keep runners and spectators alike entertained.

The Oresome Sounds will be playing at the nine mile point and the Dolly Parton tribute band at Azur on St Leonards seafront in the final mile.

The course circumnavigates Hastings and St Leonards, starting in Sea Road on seafront and following the route of William the Conqueror towards Battle, round the back of the town and down to Old Town before coming coming back along the three-mile seafront back to the starting point.

Roads will be closed for variable periods throughout the day.

Anyone needing the Conquest Hospital between 11am and 1pm should use the rear entrance access in Little Ridge Avenue, or from Hillside Road/The Ridge.

A marshall will be at Hillside Road to escort people to the to front entrance if needed.

There will be a diversion from Rye Road via Red Lake Terrace/Rock Lane, Churchill Avenue/Rye Road, which will be controlled by marshalls at Winchelsea Road/Rock Lane.

As westbound traffic will be stopped at The Bourne/Rock-a-Nore junction between 11.15am and 1.15pm, the Hastings ring road will be used to divert traffic from Old London Road via Priory Road to White Rock.

Hastings Half Marathon is organised by Hastings Lions Club.

Eric Hardwick, MBE, race director, said: “Please try to start any car journeys before 10.30am or leave until after 1.30pm. Bear in mind that the A21 and Battle Road are not affected and you can move around within the town.

“We are asking people to come out in their thousands and support the runners and walkers, most of whom are raising monies for many needy charities and causes.

“The Hastings spectators are famous the world over for their support.”
