GET ready to clap your coconuts for a ‘Taste of the Caribbean’ coming to Hailsham for the town’s sixth annual arts festival.
Hailsham Arts Festival will hit the town from September 8 to 16 with an assortment of colourful art work to enjoy and many fantastic activities.
There will be an extended arts trail using empty shops and other outlets up and down the town centre to display fascinating works of art by artists in the area.
Children’s events include a Spanish themed parade and show at 10.15am on September 15. Youngsters can dress up in a ‘Fiesta’ themed costuem and parade from Vicarage Fields, down the High Street to the Hailsham Pavilion. The youngsters will learn songs, rhymes and dance moves from ‘Tomas Tapas’.
There will also be a learning element looking at Spain’s festivals, food, and language. Entry is free and it is suitable for children aged five and upwards.
Other lively highlights of the festival mix include world music, art history, poetry, jazz, art and dance.
Jenny West, festival director, said: “ We are very excited about this years festival, it has gradually grown over the past six years and we now have established events within the programme including an excellent art trail and open studios which takes in Hailsham, Bodle Street, Rushlake Green and Herstmonceux.
“I think people are beginning to recognise that Hailsham has an artistic and cultural centre.
“We have had great support from local shops and businesses especially Hailsham Pavilion, Smythe and Barrie and the Hailsham Town Council.”
One of the aims of the festival this year is to celebrate multiculture.
Festival organisers are delighted to welcome the Euphoria Steel band and the Brighton School of Samba performing a Caribbean fiesta.
Jenny West added: “They will get your toes tapping and have you dancing in the isles at Hailsham Pavilion on September 15. Book early for this popular event.”
Another highlight is the festival art auction, now in its third year, which takes place this Monday, August 13.
