Michaela Fallon, 16, of Elm Road, Worthing, went through with the fund-raiser on Friday at Ghodsi barbers, in Warwick Street.

Joined by friends and family, she looked apprehensive as the first cuts were made but was soon smiling again.

She will split the money raised, around £150, between Cancer Research and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Mum, Judy Pierce, 53, said that Cancer Research was a charity close to both of their hearts.

“My father had cancer of the colon and managed to fight it for over several years,” she said.

“He was diagnosed when he was in his 70s and he lived until he was 84. He kept on fighting.”

She added: “I think she is brave for doing it and I don’t think I would be able to do it, but she’s doing it for a good reason.

“She had three other sisters and they said they couldn’t do it as they would be scared it wouldn’t grow back properly again.”

Since the shave, Michaela said she was feeling the cold and was wearing a woolly hat for much of the time.

She said: “Before, it was quite long and it was getting in my way.

“It was starting to get annoying.

“I just wanted to raise some money to help fight cancer and also go towards helping kids at Great Ormond Street.”

Judy said that the original fundraising target had been £1,000 but they had mainly collected on the day.

She said: “Every little helps and she still has some more donations to come.”
