Girl's abduction terror

THREE men tried to drag a screaming 13-year-old girl off the street in Durrington and bundle her into a car.

They only abandoned their abduction bid when the girl's screams alerted other people who came to help her.

The frightening incident happened outside the Lamb pub, near the Manor Parade shops in Durrington, at 8.30pm on September 10.

Police spokeswoman Jill Pedersen said: "The girl is from Worthing and she was walking home.

"When she got to the junction with Pond Lane, three men in a car invited her to get into the car. She declined.

"One of the men, wearing a baseball cap, got out of the car and tried to get her into the back of the car.

"She screamed and managed to get away."

Ms Pedersen said the girl was shaken but unhurt and went to the police station with her mum to report the incident.

Officers carried out a thorough search of the area and all local car parks. They talked to the public and local businesses and carried out door-to-door enquiries.

Detectives based at Centenary House are now investigating.

All of the men were described as being in their early 20s.

Ms Pedersen added: "Officers are particularly keen to talk to a man who passed by, wearing what was believed to be a black outfit with an orange lining and two females who may have come out of the Lamb public house itself, both of whom may have seen something."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact detective sergeant Peter Yarrow on 0845 6070999.
