Give them a break

Being snowed in gave many of us a taste of being isolated and unable to go out.

That's how life can be for many people who as carers are frequently stuck at home and have little freedom.

The Association of Carers is currently appealing for volunteers to help carers in the area, to provide a vital break from daily routine.

Fundraising Manager Jo Oliver said: "Imagine living with someone you love and cherish who has Alzheimer's, imagine being too scared to leave them alone as they have a tendency to wander, imagine being stuck with them and hearing the same questions, and stories repeated again and again.

"Would it drive you mad?

"It is a constant worry for some people and it can lead to a very restrictive and isolated life - but it doesn't need to be completely like this."

The Association of Carers is a charity which provides a free respite service to carers in Hastings and Rother to help reduce isolation as volunteers help up to three hours a week.

Jo said: "We love to offer this free service to carers but we really need some more volunteers to help us provide it.

"Is this something that appeals to you? Could you keep someone company while their carer pops out for a few hours each week? No experience is necessary and we reimburse travelling expenses and if you don't drive we can even arrange and pay for taxis. We currently need eight volunteers for local carers, can you help?

"We are looking for friendly people over 18 - there's no upper age limit, we need people from every background, sexuality and race, male or female. We will match you to someone we hope you will really connect with and possibly even become friends with '“ it could do wonders for you too. Build your confidence, gain experience and meet new friends. So why not think about it and call us as soon as you have made up your mind on 10424 722309 or email us at [email protected]

"We would also love to hear from any carers wanting a regular break."
