Golden anniversary celebrations relive couple’s love story

A couple celebrating their golden wedding anniversary relived their love story with help from their care home community.

Linda and Leslie Dersley’s love story began when the two met at a shop in Burgess Hill where Linda worked.

Leslie, who delivered the bread to the shop, was offered tea by Linda. Shortly afterwards they fell in love.

They were married at the registry office on November 29, 1969, and stayed at the Birch Hotel on their wedding night.

Today, they have two children and six grandchildren.

Leslie moved to a nursing home four years ago, following his diagnosis with Alzheimer’s, and now lives at Ashton House.

The care home team decided to help the couple celebrate their special anniversary by booking a lunch for two at the Birch Hotel.

Leslie wore his best clothes and met Linda with a single stem rose.

Ashton House presented the couple with a handmade box of memorabilia created by one of the activity staff.

Their table at the Birch Hotel was decorated with balloons and confetti, and the couple’s daughter attended to support Lin, who was emotional from all the surprises.

The couple were presented with flowers and chocolates by the hotel as a token of congratulations.
