Golden couple love to go out and about

Paul and Edna Shepherd, of Cokeham Lane, say the secret for a long, happy marriage is to always talk things through, never raise your voice and always kiss goodnight.

They both grew up in the Croydon area and met in 1952, when they both worked for bed company Sleepeezee but in different departments.

Daughter Angie Kruppa explained: “One particular day, Paul was waiting outside the department that Edna worked in, waiting for his friend Peter to finish, and suddenly Peter came running up to Paul with Edna chasing after him, as Peter had snatched her clocking in card for a joke.

“This was their first encounter. Paul asked Peter who the lovely lady was that chasing him and their relationship went from there.

“The first date was an evening at the pictures, where Paul bought Edna a box of Black Magic to eat during the film. Unfortunately, Edna did not like them but felt obliged to eat them, so as not to upset Paul on their first date.”

The couple dated for four years before marrying on June 16, 1956, at the Congregational Church in South Croydon. Their honeymoon was spent in Cliftonville, near Margate.

They lived in Selsdon Road, Addlestone, for 14 years, and it was here their three children were born. The family then moved to Purley, where they lived for 16 years, before retiring to Sompting in 1987, to be near the sea.

Angie added: “Paul and Edna enjoy going out as often as possible, whether it be by car, train or bus, and love going abroad for their holidays.”

The couple have six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
