Golden Littlehampton student praised by the Duke

GOLDEN girl Katrina Holmes had a date with royalty last Wednesday (March 14), as she received the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh’s Award certificate.

The 18-year-old student, from Littlehampton, had worked tirelessly for four years to achieve the much-sought-after gold award.

She was presented with the award by the scheme’s patron and founder the Duke of Edinburgh, during a ceremony at St James’s Palace, in London.

Katrina, who is currently finishing her A-levels at Philip Howard Catholic High School, Barnham, had to complete five sections to gain the award.

She told the Gazette that one of her most treasured memories of the experience was when she received her GCSE results, after completing a gruelling trek up Snowdon, in 2010.

The teenager is a keen sailor, having recently achieved her instructor’s certificate with the Arun Youth Aqua Centre, in Hendon Avenue, Littlehampton.

Katrina’s father, David, said witnessing his daughter receive her certificate from the Duke of Edinburgh was one of the most inspiring days of his life.

He said: “She is a real outdoors girl. This award gave her the confidence and the self-belief to achieve all of her ambitions. Over the last four years she has become more independent and self-assured.”

Katrina thanked all those who have helped her during the years.

She now hopes to become a D of E mentor.
