Goring 'eco town' detail revealed

A MINI "eco-town" is set to be created on Goring seafront with the new Bellwinch homes development.

The controversial scheme for land between Eirene Road and Sea Place, approved by Worthing borough planners, includes renewable energy and "environmentally-conscious construction" as an integral part of the design.

Architects Biscoe + Stanton say that, where appropriate, timber-frame construction, using wood from sustainable sources, will be employed.

Solar thermal panels will provide the mixed development with hot water, and air source pumps may assist with the heating.

A green sedum roof to help moderate CO2 emissions is planned for the main courtyard building.

Homes and public spaces

Included in the development are 107 high-specification one, two and three-bedroom apartments '“ mainly sea-facing) '“ within two and three-storey blocks, forming a street frontage to the existing main road, and a new public piazza and open space at the centre.

In addition, a 7,350sq ft health centre, with a publicly-accessible disabled wc, will be at the heart of the development.

The relocated sailing club building will incorporate a small retail kiosk and great views out to sea on race days.

The architects say the development responds to its seaside setting and architecture with the use of white render, timber weatherboarding, curved glazed forms and stainless steel suspension cables, "complementing the surrounding sea, waves, ships and timber beach huts".

Goring Residents' Association conducted a long campaign against aspects of the development, particularly about the loss of a piece of greensward land.
