Goring zumba event boosts Sophie’s fund

MORE than £1,000 has been raised for a little girl who is learning to walk, thanks to the efforts of fund-raisers from the area.

A charity “zumba-thon”, held for six-year-old Sophie Nugent, from Angmering, who was born with cerebral palsy, took place at Goring Cricket Ground, in Fernhurst Drive, on Sunday (July 9).

On the day, around 100 dancers took part in the marathon effort, led by dance instructor Caz Robinson, and a further couple of hundred people visited the event, which also featured stalls and a raffle.

The event, which has so far raised £1,361, but is still receiving extra sponsorship money, was organised by Trish Murrell.

She described the charity “zumba-thon” as a “community event”, which could not have happened without the support of businesses from the area.

Trish said: “We couldn’t have asked for a better day. The weather came out for us and we had around 100 dancers, which was outstanding.

“I have to thank everyone who helped – it was a real community event.”

Among the guests of honour on the day was Worthing mayor Ann Barlow, who dressed in a tutu and danced with Sophie.

Funds raised will go to the charity Help Sophie to Walk.
