Graffiti blights Armistice Day

WORTHING'S war memorial was found covered in offensive graffiti just hours before the Armistice Day service today (Saturday).

The vandalism, which included the Nazi swastika symbol, was discovered at around 6.30am this morning.

Police have confirmed other sites around the town had been sprayed overnight with similar words and symbols and an investigation has been launched.

Most of the paint was removed from the war memorial in time for the prayer and two minute silence at 11am.

Worthing mayor, Major Tom Wye, led the service and was close to tears when asked what had happened.

All he could say was: "It's unbelieveable. There are more than 600 names on the memorial."

Derek Porter, the chairman of the Worthing Royal British Legion, added: "It is an insult to all of those people."
