Great grand-granddaughter of martyred Bishop dies

JENNIE, daughter of the late and respected former Heathfield youth leader, Michael Hannington, (always known as ‘Mr H’,) passed away peacefully at home on May 18 aged 56.

She had been fighting cancer for two years.

The great-granddaughter of Bishop James Hannington, the first Bishop of Eastern Equatorial Africa who was martyred in Uganda in 1885, Jennie was born in Dar es Salaam where her father was assistant commissioner in the Colonial Police in Tanganyika.

Educated in Heathfield and Lewes, she graduated from Southampton University and worked in Bahrain, Dubai, Paris and London.

An active member of the Heathfield Historical Society and Horticultural Society, she was a committed Christian who took a full part in the life and work of St Bartholomew’s Church, Cross-in-Hand as well as attending St Richard’s Church, Heathfield.

A lover of nature and passionate advocate of the environment she spoke out strongly against what she perceived was the gradual urbanisation of her much-loved Cuckoo Trail.

A keen off-shore sailor, she recently donated funds to purchase a new Trinity 500 training boat for the Hove and Adur Sea Cadets to be named ‘Jennie H’.
