'˜Great success' for Bexhill Fairtrade campaign

The two-week campaign in Bexhill to raise awareness of third-world farmers' plight and the benefits of buying Fairtrade was a '˜great success', according to the organisers.

The Fairtrade Fortnight saw a number of events including Fairtrade breakfasts and coffee mornings in a bid to promote sustainable produce.

There were also special offers on Fairtrade goods in shops and cafes plus schools, churches and care homes got involved in their own ways.

Bexhill Fairtrade Town committee chairman Jack Doherty thanked the community for taking the message to heart and helping farmers all over the world.

“The venture has been a great success ,thanks to the proprietors and staff who made the extra efforts to promote the deal,” he said.

“Many are to continue selling the products as they were so popular.”

A raffle was available to everyone at the Fairtrade breakfasts and out of the 550 tickets bought, two lucky winners from Coffee in Style and Di Paolo’s won some Fairtrade wines.

Bexhill Central district councillor Abul Azad presented the prizes and said he was proud to be involved in an event that helped people in developing countries.

“The Fairtrade committee was launched in Bexhill 10 years ago and with the help of local residents and businesses it has become an important part of our town community,” he said.

“I urge everyone in Bexhill to be involved with the Fairtrade Community.

“Not only are you helping our town but helping individual producers who work tirelessly but do not get paid their just and fair price and wages.”

Jack challenged the community to add a few more Fairtrade items to their weekly shop to help make a difference for third-world farmers.
