Green-fingered villagers get ready for a blossoming event

Front gardens are taking shape, allotments are flourishing, and businesses in Storrington are getting their displays ready.

This year, popular children’s book series Flower Fairies will be the Storrington in Bloom theme.

Author of the books, Mary Cicely Barker, lived in Storrington in her later years, and her ashes are scattered in the parish churchyard.

Students at Rydon Community College are to design and make Flower Fairies to adorn many of the displays.

For the first time this year, residents can nominate their neighbours for the Best Front Garden and Community Area categories, and the nominator is entered into a prize draw to win a magnum of champagne.

With the help of Village Nurseries in West Chiltington, the Storrington in Bloom volunteers have been hard at work sowing seeds, planting seedlings, and preparing tubs and planters.

Local traders have generously contributed towards the costs of planting.

The Greenfingers team have also finished the summer planting in the High Street troughs, supported by a grant from the parish council.

The sunflower stand at the annual duck race has received great interest, and young people will now be striving to achieve the tallest sunflower in Storrington.

A large number of youth groups have already entered the highly successful Wheelbarrow Challenge which featured for the first time last year, and Storrington First School will be planting in Mill Square yet again.

Residents may have noticed the telephone box outside Vintage Rose café has had a lick of paint.

Storrington In Bloom has adopted it jointly with the Area Responder Scheme, to install a defibrillator, ensuring that help is not far away should it be needed.

The judges will be arriving on Tuesday July 21, and a Clean Up Day has been arranged for Sunday July 19.

This is the chance for residents to come along and find out what the event is all about, and make some new friends.

The closing date for entrants is approaching, visit www.storringtoninbloom.co.uk to enter or fill in a form and post it in the Village Florist in West Street.

The first 30 entrants get a voucher for a free pair of secateurs from Squires Garden Centre.

Closing date for Front Gardens and Community Areas entries in June 13, and the closing date for public voting for business premises is on July 30.
