GREEN LIGHT FOR TESCO - AND SCHOOL

The final conditions have been agreed for the Tesco development in Hailsham, ending 13 years of uncertainty about the north of the town centre site.

With agreement finally reach between developer, East Sussex County Council, and other authorities, Wealden District Council issued planning permission for the development on December 19, 2006.

As well as a new supermarket, Tesco has agreed to pay for a new primary school to replace White House Primary School, and for an extension to Marshland Primary School.

The development will also include a new 303- space car park on the site of North Street car park and an additional three small retail units on this site.

"Planning approval will give this part of town an important facelift," said Cllr Keith Whitehead, Cabinet member for Planning and Regeneration.

"

It has taken time to reach agreement with all interested parties. Thanks to the commitment and attention to detail shown by local councillors and officers I believe we have secured a number of important benefits for the people of Hailsham and the surrounding district."

The approved amended application was submitted to Wealden District Council in November 2004. Consent has also been granted to demolish two buildings in the Hailsham Conservation Area.

This follows a report by an independent consultant which concluded that neither building merited listing nor made a positive contribution to the conservation area.
