A MAYFIELD farmer and his family are the driving forces behind a national sustainability campaign. Steve Malkin, 46 who farms at Argos Hill with his wife Ros (43) is living the green dream at home and work. He created a smallholding with Ros and three sons, William, 17, Tom , 13 and Charlie, eight. He is also running one of the UK’s top green businesses based in London. While his family increasingly lives off the land Steve commutes to London to run Planet Positive, trying to help every other UK business become greener and save money by reducing energy, carbon emissions, water and waste.

He moved from Weald, near Sevenoaks, five years ago to buy some land and start a smallholding. He now rears his own rare breed Manx Loaghtan sheep and produces his own lamb and pork, entirely for his family. He  has an expanding vegetable patch, bantams and ducks for eggs and he even produces his own wine.

Steve is passionate about the environment and Planet Positive has just launched a national campaign to help British businesses go green for free. This has taken hold of the imagination of top entrepreneurs and is currently being supported by M&S, Tesco, Deloitte and many other large organisations. The campaign, Seven Days to Sustainability, provides free advice and materials to help businesses save money by cutting energy, carbon emissions, water and waste. Steve works with some of Britain’s largest corporations but is focused on helping small businesses stay in business. He said: “Our goal is to help small businesses get the benefits of sustainability. Whether they have three employees or 300, they can save money, win new business by being green and engage all their employees in the process. It’s good for business, for people and good for the planet.”

Every business can sign up to the free campaign by registering on the website: They will receive posters and free advice through daily emails in a seven-day sustainability programme that is easy to follow and fast to deliver. It includes access to free resources and information on energy efficiency, recycling, travel, food and water, procurement and marketing.
