And indicating that the EU debate is aligned along age related lines, 82 per cent of the College’ sixth formers voted decisively to stay ‘in.’

In second place was Chris Bowers (LibDem) with Nusrat Ghani MP (Con) third, Labour’s Solomon Curtis fourth and UKIPs’ Peter Griffiths in fifth place.

It was the Green’s third win in seven years of the annual debating event organised by the politics department where student voters enjoyed a Question Time style debate.

Davy Jones stated firmly Britain is better off in Europe citing successful and beneficial EU policies such as a voice for Europe in an increasingly globalised world, backed by Labour’s Solomon Curtis and Chris Bowers. Backing ‘Leave’ were Nus Ghani who believes the UK can strike better trade deals outside the EU and Peter Griffiths who cited the ‘untrustworthy bureaucrats of Brussels.’

All candidates agreed it’s unfair for junior doctors to have contracts imposed upon them. Nusrat Ghani was asked to comment on cuts to disability benefits, stating ‘Government intentions are never malign’ and the point of changes is to help disabled individuals who want to work but struggle to find employment. But all other candidates criticised the Government’s policy.

There were mixed responses to a question about the demolition of the Calais ‘jungle’ with the left drawing comparison with Jews fleeing persecution in the 1930s and saying we have a moral duty to help.

Student chair Owen Mudford’s last question about whether a Donald Trump presidency could be disastrous for the US or even the world, saw Nus Ghani note Trump’s xenophobic views and willingness to build walls which are not welcome in a liberal, 21st century world. Chris Bowers referred to US President Reagan’s campaign when many were apprehensive but relieved to find his presidency was not as disastrous as predicted. Griffiths could not decide who would be a worse President, Hillary Clinton or Trump ‘as they both have questionable reputations.’ Solomon Curtis claimed he was ‘feeling the Bern’ due to his support for Bernie Sanders.
