Grenade Found

THE DISCOVERY of a live hand grenade brought disruption to Bexhill Town Centre on Monday.

Workers removing cabin 'footings' near the wall running alongside the railway line in Station Road discovered the device.

Police closed the eastern end of the road at around 9.30am while officers waited for the bomb disposal unit to arrive from Folkestone.

Residents whose homes face the road were asked to move to the rear of their properties until the grenade was removed.

The decision was later taken to temporarily close Bexhill Station.

The Royal Logistic Corp Bomb Disposal Service (BDS) arrived at 11am and soon confirmed the object lying in the muddy verge was a World War II style-grenade.

It was taken to Little Common Recreation Ground in a bomb-proof box for a controlled explosion to be performed. Station Road was reopened soon after.
