Grosvenor Park - traffic fears expressed to Greg

Road safety issues for the vulnerable and elderly in the vicinity of Marina was the topic of discussion at a meeting held at Grosvenor Park Nursing Home, Bexhill last week.

Heading the meeting was MP Greg Barker; also in attendance was Cllr Deirdre Williams along with representatives from East Sussex County Council Highways department, Brian Banks and Richard Smith.

Local and Grosvenor Park residents expressed their concern over the speed and volume of traffic that travels along Marina making it difficult for them to cross the road safely without the security of a crossing.

Ideally the type of crossing they would like to see put in place would be one where there is a small island with bollard's in the middle of the road. This would provide them with the opportunity to stop half way across, enabling them to concentrate on the flow of traffic in one direction at a time.

Some of the suggestions put forward included installing traffic calming measures such as sleeping policeman all the way along Marina but Mr Smith said that simply was not possible as it would cost, "somewhere in the region of a quarter of a million pounds."

However, a crossing with a centre island would be much more viable as the road is wide enough to take the structure with costs significantly reduced to nearer 15,000; although there is still the question of funding.

Mr Barker who wholeheartedly supports the idea said that the highways department should, "concentrate on the fundamentals of finding a solution to the problem so that people can cross the road safely." And he would, "concentrate on finding an answer to the funding issue."
