Katrina Wakefield, founder of Heartspace, has been reflecting on the activities that the group has been taking part in.

She said: “The aim of Heartspace is to bring people aged 18 and over together in creative activities that help self-expression, thereby combating isolation and promoting good mental health and positive wellbeing in the community. All our activities carry a philosophy that there is no right or wrong way of expressing oneself, be that through music, singing, painting, movement or other. Last month, for example, we had a demonstration in intuitive painting, which anyone can do! There were a couple of comments of “ I can’t paint!”, but by the end of the session everyone had produced a picture on canvas with some colourful results.”

“We have a varied and full calendar of events, details of which are on leaflets in Chichester and East Wittering libraries. “

Katrina is very grateful for the assistance that has helped Heartspace.

She said: “We are extremely lucky to be supported by our local mental health charity Coastal West Sussex Mind, who come to each session with leaflets, and are on hand for advice and information, and Manhood Minibus Service, who will pick up anyone in the Manhood peninsula who has difficulty getting to us. Also to East Wittering Council; and all the facilitators who donate their time for free. We have a tiny budget so all donations are very welcome: canvasses, acrylics, paints, fabric, small musical instruments, or money!”

The sessions run on the third Wednesday of every month apart from December (second Wednesday). Suggested donation of £3 per person per session.
