Groups bidding forcommunity grants

In all, 12 groups have applied in the final round of hand-outs from the 2013/14 Adur Competitive Community Grants budget.

Cllr David Simmons, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, will be making the final decisions this week.

The largest grant, of £5,706.10, has been requested by 3rd/5th Lancing Sea Scouts to upgrade the group’s 1980s building.

Funding of £5,000 has been requested by Adur Special Needs Project to pay for staff, mainly for the weekend play scheme sessions.

More volunteers could be trained to support families in Fishersgate, if the Home Start application succeeds.

The group has asked for £3,264 to fund a 36-hour preparation course for eight volunteers to work in both Fishersgate and Lancing.

Swiss Gardens Primary School, in Shoreham, is taking part on a multicultural project at Worthing Museum and £4,500 is requested to support them and help them access the workshops there.

The Kala Chethena Kathakali Troupe has made the application to help with its project, which will teach Indian traditions through performance, art, costume and music.

Music is the basis of the Shoreham Allstars application for £4,659 to pay for recording equipment.

This will allow young people to produce their own films and music videos and the equipment will also be available to schools in the area.

Shoreham and Adur Debt Centre wants £2,000 to continue its ‘essential work’, providing free debt counselling in partnership with Christians Against Poverty.

International Neighbours, which works to build positive relationships and create a strong, inclusive community, is looking for £1,828 to stage a day of multicultural activities.

This will include stage performances of dance and singing, a wide variety of stalls with different ethnic wares and information, foods from other cultures, children’s activities and music.

Adur Healthy Walkers, which was set up in January 2006, has asked for £1,000 to help train new leaders and provide first aid equipment.

Southlanders Community Group, which runs a café in Wilmot Road, Shoreham, currently has to share food storage space, so it has asked for £500 to buy its own fridge freezer.

South Downs Woodturners, which meets at Lancing Parish Hall, wants £4,407.93 to fund demonstrations and equipment.

Funding of £1,830 for healthy eating and activity sessions has been requested by Sussex Clubs for Young People. The idea is to run sessions the Fishersgate Centre, Quayside Youth Centre in Southwick and Lancing Youth Centre, using a community chef and volunteers from Shoreham Academy and the Sir Robert Woodard Academy.

There would also be three taster sessions at Adur Outdoor Activities Centre to encourage physical activity and offer the chance to try something new.

Shoreham Boat Angling Club wants to put on four days of free angling and environmental days, including free coaching, and a grant of £2,064.45 is requested.
