Guestling school raises money for Conquest Hospital

Pupils and staff from a primary school have donated almost £2,100 to the Special Care Baby Unit at the Conquest Hospital.

The money, raised by Guestling Bradshaw School, will go towards purchasing a piece of equipment called a Tecotherm which helps to cool babies with suspected brain injury after birth.

The cash was raised through a variety of the events by the children, parents, friends and members of the school.

This included The Guestling Bake off with children and parents baking cakes and selling them off with tea or coffee, gunge the teacher, where children paid to gunge a teacher of their choice including the head, as well as a sponsored maths test for the whole school, along with stalls at school fetes.

In addition, teachers, Lucy Godley and Faith Rew, raised money trekking across the Jordan desert from the Dead Sea to Petra in April this year. This trek was preceded by a warm-up sponsored walk from Hastings Pier to Eastbourne Pier.

Lucy said: “The fundraising across the year has been supported by close friends, family and many parents and families from our school without them this donation would not have been possible. We would like to say a final thank you to everyone who supported us along the way.”

Neonatal Sister Alison Mardell said: “On behalf of the staff of the Special Care Baby Unit we are extremely grateful for this generous donation. A lot of hard work has gone into raising this large amount. The money will go towards a vital new piece of equipment which will allow us to cool a baby with a suspected brain injury at birth.”
