COMPUTERS FOR CHARITIES: Simon Rooksby reports on CfCs latest delivery over the August bank holiday weekend: Our Christmas shoebox appeal 2016 begins. Yes still August but despite this warm weather, our first delivery of shoeboxes arrived last week. The bank holiday weekend we drove back to Romania delivering more play equipment. Junk here but Gold to communities elsewhere. It was some weekend, driving to Northern Romania and back. 2900 miles covered, temperatures rising to 38c. But great to meet our friends and pass over more materials and resources for their amazing support and work to the communities and people around Cluj. A marathon drive back, leaving Cluj around midday to arrive 24 hours later in Calais amidst the UK bank holiday rush of folk returning home. 30 hours after leaving Cluj back home and fast asleep on the couch until 7am this morning having driven non stop through the night on Sunday. Breakdowns yes, incidents yes but all overcome. Thanks also to P&O for a great crossing. TOWN HERITAGE: Residents and visitors to Hailsham can learn more about the town’s heritage and historical significance by walking the Hailsham Heritage Trail. In partnership with local historian Paul Endersby, principal writer of the Hailsham Heritage Trail guide, a number of buildings and other locations of interest of historical importance were identified by the Town Council, the majority of which have been included in the Trail which was launched in 2012. The guide includes historical photos and a description of each of the 27 Buildings and locations of interest that make up the Hailsham Heritage Trail. The map itself directs people around the town centre and its outskirts visiting such sites as ‘The Stone’, a Grade II listed building, originally built in the 1320s and probably the oldest house in the town and Hailsham Parish Church (formerly St Mary’s Parish Church), a Grade I listed building dating back to the early 15th century. The Trail also covers the ‘Fleur de Lys/Inglenook’ in Market Street, which was originally built in the reign of Elizabeth I (1542) as part of the original hostelry of the town and Cortlandt in George Street, a Grade II listed building originally occupied by American Philip van Cortlandt who fought on the British side in the American War of Independence, before ceasing to be a residence in 1932 when it was bought by the then Hailsham Rural District Council for use as offices. Other sites of interest include the Old Court House, Hailsham Pavilion, Wellington Lodge, the old Village School and the site of the former Hailsham Railway Station. Copies of the Hailsham Heritage Map and Guide are available for members of the public to purchase (cost £1) at the Town Council offices in Market Street.

HAILSHAM LIONS: For the next year, Geraldine Gurr is the new president of Hailsham Lions, replacing Keith Shonfeld, who will now, among other things, oversee the club’s Fun Day and Dog Show next year. One of Geraldine Gurr’s first engagements was to present a cheque for £600 to St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Eastbourne. The money was raised at the club’s fundraising golf day held at the local Wellshurst Golf Club, where the tournament is held every year. Accepting the cheque from Geraldine, Christine Clark thanked the club and said, ‘All our services are delivered free and our latest figures show that during 2015/16 we were able to care for over one thousand patients throughout our local area who are living with a terminal illness. It costs just over £11,800 per day to run St Wilfrid’s Hospice and the NHS fund only 25 percent of this. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY: The Summer Show is tomorrow, Saturday, at Summerheath Hall, Summerheath Road, from 2pm to 5pm. Entry 50p.

ARTS AND CULTURE FESTIVAL: Get your tickets now. There is a fantastic line-up of events for this year’s festival which runs from September 8 to 18. Tickets for events are now on sale plus there are many free events and activities. Pick up your free programme from many outlets in the area including shops, restaurants and venues in Hailsham, Hailsham Town Council offices, local libraries and Tourist Information offices.

TWO RAMBLES: A long and a short walk on Wednesday. The long is with Martin (T:325819) of 5 miles being the Seven Sisters Country Park circular. There are four stiles plus a low wall and two uphill sections. The short walk is with Michael and Linda (T:845479) through Bell Lane, Nutley. It is a walk on paths and if everyone agrees, a small wooded walk. 3 miles. Please ring the walk leaders in the first instance for details and to let them know you would like to go along. BEATLES TRIBUTE: Tickets are now on sale for the Beatles tribute concert to be held on behalf of Demelza Hospice Care for Children charity. The band, The Electric Beatles, come well recommended and are travelling here from Folkestone on Thursday to form part of the Hailsham Festival of Arts and Culture. The show at Hailsham Parish Church starts at 8pm, with doors open at 7.30pm and tickets at just £10. They are available from the Demelza shop, or by calling Pam on 844020. STRAY DOGS FOR HAILSHAM FM: Hailsham FM are proud to announce their next fund raising event. Local duo, Stray Dogs, will be performing at a specially arranged event on Saturday September 24 at Grovelands School, Dunbar Drive. The evening will start at 7pm through to 11pm and will feature the duo performing two sets. Stray Dogs, comprising singer/guitarists Alex Grayson and Garry Wonfor, have established themselves as one of the most popular entertainment attractions in the area. With their superb vocal harmonies and intricate guitar playing, they will perform personalised cover versions of Hotel California and American Pie from their vast repertoire that also includes original compositions. There will also be a cash bar and charity raffle. Tickets are £5.50 each plus booking fee from www.eventbrite.com/stray-dogs. RIDE AND STRIDE: Formerly the Sponsored Bike Ride, Ride and Stride returns again this year tomorrow, Saturday, giving a unique opportunity for riders, either on bicycles (or horseback) and walkers to explore some historic churches, some of which are not normally open and at the same time enjoy the lovely Sussex Countryside. Alternatively, a good number of town churches can be visited without undue effort on foot with Eastbourne, Lewes and Chichester (where there are a large number of historic churches in a small area) being particularly fruitful territories. As St Mary’s team of riders are now for the most part ‘of more mature years’, it would be good if some younger riders could be encouraged to take part this year in this worthwhile event. There is no set route, but riders can either go in a group or as individuals visiting open or listed churches of their choice. Monies raised support the Sussex Historic Churches Trust which gives grants towards the cost of repair to all mainstream churches and chapels more than 100 years of age something which is particularly helpful to small congregations in rural parishes. Also up to 50 percent of the monies raised come back to help fund repair works to our own church. As usual, volunteers are also required to keep the church open during the day and to welcome visitors.
