KNITTING GROUP: Knit'Inn Nights at The King's Head. At the last meeting there was a slight air of frustration. Almost everyone was working on newish projects, and each was challenging. There was lace knitting, Fair Isle patterning and textured work. Each piece changing row on row and increasing or decreasing at the same time. The topics of conversation were varied and not especially knit related, and as a consequence of allowing concentration to slip mistakes were made. Knitting had to be roved and redone, several people remarking that although they had knitted through the session, their work had not grown at all. It doesn't always happen like that. The next night will be Tuesday and the topic will be Fair Isle knitting. Sessions start at 7.30pm, for more information phone Su (07552229473) or just come on the night.

WORLD THINKING DAY: Monday is one of the most significant dates in the Guiding calendar. On the day, Guides and Girl Scouts everywhere think of each other and of their commitment to international friendship and understanding. For this reason, Hailsham Community College are allowing students to wear their Scouting or Guiding uniforms to college, instead of their usual uniform. Any students that belong to similar groups are also permitted to wear their uniform.

LANDS END TO JOHN O’GROATS: This sponsored challenge is for the East Sussex Hearing Resource Centre on a BMW from Lands End to John O’Groats in a day. It takes place on May 12 and it will be 40 years since Simon Rooksby’s (of Computers for Charities) good buddy made the run in 1976 in 18 hours 30 minutes. Unfortunately he is not available to do a repeat, but Simon plans to follow in his footsteps and commemorate this achievement. Support and sponsors welcome, plus any cups of coffee along the trail. Peter remains a good friend of Simon’s and converted him to BMW motorcycles. CfC accepts people from all backgrounds and last year included three deaf lads. Simon has also had a close association with the East Sussex Hearing Resource Centre for around 30 years so there are a lot of links and he is hoping to raise awareness and a lot of links for the cause. Deaf awareness week is from May 2 to 8.

BUSINESS FORUM: Hailsham Businesses are invited to attend the next forum. If you operate a business within Hailsham, you are invited to a meeting of the newly formed Hailsham Business Forum on Thursday at the Hailsham Civic Community Hall from 6.30pm. The Hailsham Business Forum, which has been set up by the Hailsham Forward Town Team to supplement the Community Forum established in 2015, aims to provide a discussion group for businesses and retailers with a common interest in a prosperous future for Hailsham to voice their views. Ways to promote Hailsham, bring more people into the town and encourage traders to work together to boost the local economy will also be encouraged at the forum. Meetings will be attended by members of the Hailsham Forward Town Team and councillors and take place on a regular basis. They are open to all members of the local business community. The next meeting will look at the town centre improvement works scheduled to take place later this year and provide an update on the scheme, as well as the potential introduction of a Loyalty Card scheme in Hailsham. Individual invitations will be sent out to all known businesses in Hailsham soon. If you wish to attend the next Hailsham Business Forum please write to Mickey Caira (Town Council Offices, Market Street, Hailsham BN27 2AE) or send an email to [email protected] confirming your attendance. Deputy Town Clerk and Business Enterprise Manager Mickey Caira said that the forum is instrumental in promoting the town as a viable business centre and it is hoped that meetings will help enable a range of projects and initiatives to be discussed. Hailsham Forward wants to reflect the ideas of local businesses and residents, so this is a good time to tell us your ideas. Rob Slater, Chairman of the Hailsham Forward Executive added that it is so important that we all support local businesses and help improve the local economy in Hailsham so we hope this forum will be a united voice for all businesses and retailers in the town. However, input is needed and it is important that we get as many business representatives as possible to take part.

BARN DANCE: There are still some tickets available for the Springtime Barn Dance on Saturday March 5 hosted by Environment Hailsham and Hailsham FM radio. Blow away the winter blues with the ever popular Spinning Jenny Band at Grovelands School Hall, from 7pm to 11.30pm. Tickets are £10, children free and are available from [email protected] or call 01323 840382 or 07904 866328. It promises to be an evening of dancing and fun for all ages with the Spinning Jenny Band, plus additional dance music played by Hailsham FM’s Helen Lawrence. There will be an exclusive raffle and refreshments available. This joint promotion is the first of several planned this year and all money raised will be split between the two organisations.

BONFIRE BINGO: This evening, Friday, at the Charles Hunt Centre raising funds for the next bonfire and fireworks celebration, which this year will take place on October 22. Doors open at 7pm for eyes down at 7.30pm.

RAMBLES: On Wednesday the long ramble is the Blackboys circular which is a flattish walk and generally dry of 4.7 miles with a few stiles. Ring Elaine or Larry on 01323 214374 for the details if you would like to go along. If you would prefer a shorter stroll then Nobby on 01323 440624 is leading the Princes Park circular. Ring for details.

‘ALLO ‘ALLO: The Dicker Players are presenting this performance of ‘Allo ‘Allo at Hailsham Pavilion on Friday February 26 from 7.30pm to 10pm. Tickets from the box office.

PULSE: After a long Christmas break the after school club for children under 11 years and their parents is back on Tuesday afternoons from February 23 until March 22 from 3.15 to 5pm in St Mary’s church lounge. The children come along with enthusiasm (the toast and chocolate spread helps) and enjoy playing games and doing the crafts. This term they will be thinking about how God speaks to us and how we can speak to him. The term ends on Tuesday with a family meal. For information contact Lyn Gooding on 441868.

100 YEARS AGO: In February 1916 the Reverent FC Harvey report that Mrs Farrant passed creditable the Oxford Local Senior Examination. Mrs Farrant is at present doing good work at Arlington Park Mead Council School. She became qualified now to the post of Assistant Teacher (uncertificated). Coy, Quarter-Master-Sergt-Major Hugh Roberts of our Council School has been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for services rendered at the Front. This makes the third award of this coveted distinction to teachers and scholars from Hailsham. But it has cost dearly; Lieut Marillier was killed; Sergt-Major Milward is in hospital - behind that noble rampart of loyalty and bravery we are resting quietly and securely in our homes. It surely appeals to all young men, yes, to all men to rise to the call. It also shows that the education and atmosphere of our Hailsham school produces fine men.

CORINTHIAN CHURCH: The Service this Sunday starts at 11am in Primrose Hall, London Road, Hailsham and is followed by refreshments. The Medium on this occasion is Rev Petula Stowell.
