Traffic reports say Battle Road is partially blocked both ways due to the burst, which is between the B2202 London Road and A271 Hawkswood Road. Traffic is coping well.

Andrew Davin, South East Water distribution manager, said: “We are very sorry to customers in Hailsham who are without water or have low pressure this morning (September 23), following a burst on a nine-inch diameter water main in Battle Road, Hailsham.

“The burst happened in the early hours of this morning and our repair teams are currently working to fix the pipe as quickly and safely as possible.

“While we work to repair the main we have redirected water around our complex network of underground pipes to restore supplies to as many customers as possible.

“We are aware that 24 customers have experienced water supply issues as a result of the burst and we are extremely sorry for the disruption caused.

“Bursts and leaks are inevitable because we transport 540 million litres of water a day around 9,000 miles of underground pipes and happen for a number of reasons, including increased demand for water, changes in weather and ground movement.
