Hailsham Arts Festival 2013 started with an umbrella parade.

The eighth Hailsham Festival of Arts and Culture is just three weeks away and the town is gearing up to put on an event to remember.

Now in its eighth year the festival will see a lively, ten-day programme of diverse and innovative events.

Festival highlights include the art trail, jazz and rock community choir, film festival and competition, poetry, art history, music, dance, workshops, children’s sports show and a barn dance.

The multicultural theme this year is India. The festival art exhibition features a vibrant series of paintings based on Indian street life and the nationally acclaimed dance company ‘Bhangracise’ will perform both traditional Indian dance and highly energetic contemporary Bollywood and Bhangra.

From 10.30am-noon on Saturday, September 13 (opening morning) the Memphis Flyers will play by the War Memorial and there will be a fashion parade at the Quintins shopping centre followed by the opening concert at Hailsham Parish Church. Wealden Parliamentary candidate Nus Ghani will officially open the festival. The newly-formed jazz and rock choir from Herstmonceux entertains with a medley of songs, and one or two numbers from Hailsham’s jazz singer, Linda Francis and pianist Pete Willson.

Light lunch and refreshments will be available in the refectory afterwards.

On the same day the Tour of Britain reaches Hailsham (see page 7) where there will be a number of events taking place in the town.

There will also be a Hailsham Cake Bake, children’s fancy dress and a decorated shop window competition. On September 16 there will be poetry readings by the Downland poets, and on September 17 there will be an art history talk and a wine tasting. The Bhangracise festival finale takes place on September 20 at 7.30pm at Hailsham Pavilion.

People can also tune into the Hailsham Festival radio station to listen to Jenny West and the festival team throughout the event.
