Hailsham man swims from car in Pevensey water ditch

A HAILSHAM man swam from his car after it fipped over into a ditch full of water in the Pevensey Bay area.

The 24-year-old driver was travelling along the A259 Wallsend Road at 10.45pm last night (April 19) when he came to a sharp bend and his car ended up in the ditch.

Another motorist saw the car veer off the road and then the Hailsham man swam clear from the submerged vehicle.

But the deathtrap survivor ran away and a police hunt was launched to find him.

Police found the man unconcious at 11.30pm in a field nearby.

He was treated by an ambulance crew and taken for further assessment to Eastbourne District General Hospital. But the man later discharged himself.

Police Sgt Bryan McCartney said: “The man was very lucky to have been found so quickly. He landed in very cold water but managed to swim from the car and ran away.”

Police found the man with the help of a police dog, Sgt McCartney added.

He said: “When we spoke with him he was shivering but wasn’t injured and appears ok.”
