A man accused of attempting to kill his wife and baby son by setting fire to their home is standing trial this week.

Duc Bac Vuong is charged with two counts of attempted murder and one of arson with intent to endanger life following the blaze at Hollywood Nails, in Hailsham.

The 51-year-old appeared at Hove Crown Court yesterday (Monday, January 4) after denying all the charges.

Emergency services were called to High Street shortly after 5pm on March 4, 2015, to reports of a fire in an upstairs room above the nail salon.

The Vietnamese family were all initially taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. The baby, who was five months old at the time, was later transferred to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, also in Brighton, before being moved to a specialist burns unit at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

Mr Vuong and his wife, then aged 21, was transferred to the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead. She was discharged around a month later, while he was put in an induced coma. He was officially charged by police in July 2015.

The trial is ongoing.
