Hailsham residents to get rewards for shopping vandals

HAILSHAM Town Council looks set to offer cash rewards in exchange for vital evidence which leads to the successful prosecution of vandals.

The idea was floated by Cllr Nick Ellwood in a bid to encourage residents to inform police when they see council property being vandalised.

Cllr Bob Burnett commended the idea at a meeting of councillor this week, suggesting a 250 pay-out to those who shop criminals.

'It s already costing this council 3,000 to tidy up after the latest problems,' he said. 'We must be seen to do something positive. This must be worth a try.'

Cllr Ellwood said: 'Evidence will be the key thing. Proper evidence is what we are after. In exchange, the informant would get the reward. I think money has got a big mouth on it.'

Insp Tim Piloni cautiously welcomed the idea. He said: 'This is a good suggestion.

'Anything which gets the public to let me know when and where crimes are happening will be welcomed.'

The move highlights the council s commitment to stamping out anti-social behaviour and should encourage the reporting of more crimes.

The full council will now decide on the policy at its meeting on July 2.

SECURITY guards could soon tour the town s country park and playgrounds in a bid to combat unruly teenage behaviour.

Cllr Nick Ellwood prompted the discussion on Monday night. He said: 'If we now have a party going on at the country park and employed someone to patrol it, we would not be facing bills running into hundreds of pounds.'

Initial quotes suggest the idea could cost taxpayers 80-100 per 15 hour shift a small price to pay, according to some councillors.

'At the end of the day something like this would save ratepayers money. We should look at this seriously,' said Cllr John Glover.

Cllr John Garvican also suggested security staff should carry a camera to capture vandals in the act.

Councillors on the policy and resources committee agreed to the idea in principle. Council staff will now develop the details.
