Hair experts get top tips to keep their skin safe

HANDY advice has been given to hairdressers around Bognor Regis.

The stylists were shown how to protect their hands from skin problems as part of a free session in the town hall.

The dermatitis awareness session was hosted by Arun District Council and run by its senior health and safety officer, Steve Pope.

He said: “I have seen in particular young staff suffering with dermatitis and you can not help but feel sorry for them, especially as this is avoidable.

“Hairdressers are 17 times more likely to get dermatitis than any other profession due to the frequent wetting and drying of hands as well as contact with chemicals.

“It affects 70 per cent of hairdressers at some point, and can reduce quality of life and, in some cases, can prevent people working as hairdressers.

“Arun’s environmental health team are also running training courses and visiting beauty industry-related premises to assess how employers control risks to their staff and others who may be affected by their activities.

The officers want to raise awareness of health-related issues associated with sun bed use, nail salons, fish pedicures, the use of lasers and hairdressing.
