More than 1,200 primary school children from Wealden can experience a ‘hands-on’ learning event at Bowles Outdoor Centre near Eridge (June 2-6) and at Herstmonceux Castle (June 16-20.)

The emphasis with Safety in Action is active learning by experiencing risk – even if children make mistakes along the way.

Hazard scenaries include road and personal safety by Sussex Police, dealing with a casualty by South East Coast Ambulance, reporting an arson attack and electrical safety by East Sussex Fire and Rescue, a rucksack on the railway line by Southern Railway, alcohol safety by NHS school nurses and Wealden District Council’s safety on a farm .

The 48 schools taking part can compete for prizes including the Uckfieidl Lions Club Award for Overall Safety Champion and the Servomex Road Safety Award.

Cllr Claire Dowling said: “What helps make the experience really memorable is the range of hazard situations we are able to cover, thanks to excellent partnership working involving the public services and health professionals.”
