Hastings Borough Council has shown its support for the many people killed and injured in the massacre in Orlando last Sunday by flying the rainbow flag at half mast.

Council leader Cllr Peter Chowney said: “It’s important that we stand united in the fight against terror attacks and hate crime in our towns and cities.

“As a symbol of our respect the rainbow flag (LGBT movement) is flying at half-mast from the town hall.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with the many people in America who have been affected by this horrendous attack on Sunday.”

However Rother District Council has not followed suit.

A spokesman for RDC said: “We only fly a flag on a very limited number of occasions and lower it in line with national commemorations.

“However we would like to express our deepest condolences and support to the LGBT community, and the family and friends of those affected by events in Orlando.”
