Hastings Direct staff get on their bikes

HASTINGS Direct staff got on their bikes to support safe motorcycling on Wednesday.

The Bexhill-based insurance provider encouraged its staff to bring their motorbikes and scooters in as part of Ride To Work Day.

The day is an initiative which Hastings Direct and Equity are supporting and coincides with the launch of a new safe biking website - www.safebikingday.com - which is a site built by bikers, for bikers.

Motorcyclists represent just one per cent of road traffic, yet suffer around 20 per cent of deaths and serious injuries on the road. The website focuses on promoting safety awareness and directly supports the Government's THINK! campaign which hopes to achieve a 40 per cent reduction in motorcycle casualties by 2010.

Claire Day, marketing director for Hastings Direct, said: "We know all too well the serious consequences of road traffic accidents involving both bikes and cars. By encouraging staff to ride to work - along with a pillion passenger to accompany them - we hope to raise the profile of the safety campaign and support the 70 radio stations and newspapers around the country who will be helping to launch www.safebikingday.co"
