Dunning appeared at Lewes Crown Court on April 14 and was remanded in custody until his trial on August 30.

Detective Superintendent Nick May, of Sussex Police, said: “These threats were allegedly made to a third party who raised their concerns with police. No direct threats were made to any children or school staff.

“Police have been working closely with East Sussex County Council and the relevant head teachers to put measures in place so that we were confident that no pupils would be at risk while an investigation was carried out.

“If the risk to anyone had changed we would have made the staff and parents immediately aware.”
