Irresponsible dog owners are being urged to abide by the rules or risk having their four-legged friends banned from the pier.

Hastings Pier has said that ‘a small minority’ of owners have been leaving their dog’s mess on the decking and allowing their animals to climb on to food tables.

In a statement, Hastings Pier Charity said: “We currently operate a policy which allows well-behaved dogs on short leads with responsible owners to promenade the pier all year round.

“We do ask that no dogs go in or on the Upper Deck or in The Pavilion Restaurant & Bar seating areas, and that any mess made needs to be cleared up by the owners.

“These rules have been put in place to keep the pier as safe, clean and welcoming as possible for every visitor.

“We have had several instances of a small minority of people allowing dogs on the Upper Deck (sometimes on food tables), in The Pavilion Restaurant & Bar seating areas and leaving their dog’s mess on the pier decking.

“This is having a negative impact on other visitors’ experiences of the pier.

“Therefore, if this continues we will sadly have to restrict times when dogs are allowed, and in the worst-case scenario ban dogs from the pier altogether.

“We are therefore appealing to our dog-loving visitors to spread the word about our rules and politely remind one another when they see them being broken and, if the owner refuses to cooperate, to report any misdemeanours to a member of staff or Hastings Pier Charity volunteers in The Deck shop.”

Last month, 62 dogs and their owners met at the pier to protest against rules banning dogs from the structure during the summer.

The pier previously said dogs on leads would only be allowed onto the pier during the off-peak season (September 30 to April 30).

It later amended its policy to allow well-behaved dogs on short leads all year round.
