Hastings pub closes after almost 70 years of trade

A well-known pub in town has ceased trading.

The Robert de Mortain, on The Ridge, was put up for sale by its owner late last year.

It was on the market for more than half a million pounds as the owner said it wanted to sell off the pub, saying it ‘no longer fits within (its) core estate’.

Greene King, the owner, invited offers in excess of £550,000 from prospective buyers.

A spokeswoman for Greene King said the company was unable to disclose any information on the new buyers of the site nor how much it was sold for.

The Robert de Mortain traded for almost 70 years, having first being licensed as a pub in 1948.

It was used a number of times as a venue over the years by Hastings Rock Radio each May in its broadcasts in aid of St Leonards-based charity, St Michael’s Hospice.
