A Hastings resident is celebrating after winning the Women’s Institute (WI) National Poetry Prize.
Stephanie Gaunt was presented with the Lady Denman Cup, awarded for the best poem written by a WI member on the theme ‘What My WI Means To Me’ at the WI’s annual meeting held at the Royal Albert Hall, London, in June.
Stephanie, who lives in Clive Vale, said no-one was more surprised than she to win the competition but was nevertheless “delighted” to receive the Lady Denman Cup.
Stephanie moved to Hastings from Birmingham four years ago and is currently President of the Ore Branch of the WI.
As well as writing poetry (she is a member of the Hastings’ Stanza Group) she also belongs to the Hastings Writers Group; she won the group’s Writer of the Year.
Stephanie says that moving to Hastings has given her the time and inspiration to fulfil her lifelong ambition to write. “All I need now is to write a best-seller,” she said.
