Have you ever heard of the Beeding Bounce?

It was a country dancing routine performed by children at Upper Beeding Primary School at their summer fete in 1983.

And it helped them to raise £800 for audio-visual equipment.

As well as the Bounce, the children took part in gymnastic displays, a fancy cake contest and, of course, a fancy dress competition.

There were some curiously named entrants in the latter, with Katrina Robb coming second in the young juniors section as ‘baked beans’, and Nicky Luck winning the pre-school contest as ‘eight draws’.

Robert Wood, as a Jack In The Box, and Jane Langley, as a butterfly, were much easier to visualise.

Elsewhere, the children of tiny St Robert Southwell Primary proved bigger was not necessarily better when they shattered their school’s fundraising record in 1983.

The four teachers and 85 children swelled the school’s coffers by £1,700 thanks to a rather successful fete.

The fete was opened by Kermit the Frog and saw former Redhill FC goalkeeper Peter O’Brien facing a barrage of shots during the beat the goalie contest.

His professional pride was intact by the end of the day as few of the parents, staff or children managed to slot one past him.

One of the parents showed off his ‘dad dancing’ and impressive record collection as he served as disc jockey Chris the Disc.
