The building which used to house the magistrates’ court in Bolnore Road is being reduced to rubble to make way for apartments for the elderly.

The plans, which include 36, one and two bed apartments, a lounge and guest suite, were passed by Mid Sussex District Council last year. There will also be parking for 19 cars with access on to Bolnore Road.

The application received support from Haywards Heath Town Council and the Haywards Heath Society.

The developer said the age of occupants is restricted to 60 years of age and above, but will ‘typically’ attract residents in their late 70s or older – who are no longer able to cope with the running and maintenance of their family home.

Mid Sussex District Council received seven letters of objection to the plans.

Julia Fowler, from Haywards Heath said she was ‘concerned with the volume of traffic’ on Bolnore Road, which she said had ‘increased significantly’.

However, developers said there is likely to be a ‘very low car ownership amongst residents of sheltered housing which is in walking distance of shops.
