Head-on collision

Victims of a head-on collision were rushed to the Conquest on Sunday with serious injuries.

Bexhill firemen worked for almost an hour to free the drivers from two cars which crashed going in opposite directions.

The silver BMW driven by a 69 year old female driver was headed towards Hastings, with three passengers on board, while a green Toyoto Avensis with a 49 year old woman inside was travelling towards Sidley.

Both drivers and two of the BMW passengers were seriously injured.

The fifth victim also required urgent medical attention.

Wrestwood Road was closed to traffic as three fire appliances attended the scene following the call out at 4.20.

Sub officer John Owen said that two appliances came from the Bexhill station plus another from Herstmonceux as firefighters worked for 45 minutes to free the injured parties.

He said that the driver of the BMW was physically trapped inside the car, while the person in the other car also needed to be freed and was complaining of chest and back pain.

"We needed an extra set of hydraulic cutting equipment to work on the two cars separately - we worked on both at the same time," he said.

"But it was a relatively straight-forward extraction."

Officers from the Polegate traffic unit attended the scene, and closed the road for more than three hours while the vehicles were removed.

Any witnesses to the accident are asked to call PC Chris Storey on 0845 60 70 999 and quote incident reference number 2006/10761.
