Healthy Littlehampton sandwich shop takes the top crust

A SANDWICH shop in Littlehampton has received a top award for its nutritious cooking practices.

It’s been a year since the ‘eat out eat well’ scheme was launched in the Arun district. It aims to encourage caterers to adopt healthier cooking practices and now has three award-winners in the Arun district.

Takeaway and delivery outlet Upper Crust, in East Street, received a gold award in the scheme after adapting its menu to include lighter bites. The free award is open to all types of food businesses which cater for the general public and is assessed and managed by the environmental health team at Arun District Council.

It has been developed as more people than ever are regularly eating away from home and a survey by the Food Standards Agency found diners want to see more healthy options.

There are three levels of the award scheme, bronze, silver and gold, based on a scoring system that takes into account the type of food on offer, cooking methods, and how it is promoted to customers.

So far, only three outlets in the district have achieved the accolade. However, it is hoped that more will make the benchmark this year.
