Healthy meals plan for North Bersted

Healthy eating sessions are set to replace meal times in a disused kitchen in a North Bersted housing scheme.

The knowledge about eating well will be among the courses likely to be offered in the new learning centre planned for Bersted Green Court.

The creation of the learning and community use facility in the 1970s sheltered housing scheme with mainly elderly residents is intended to bring new life into its disused restaurant and kitchen.

Other likely subjects to be discussed on the courses will be stopping smoking and budgeting as well as formal Skills for Life learning in computing and informal activities like yoga.

Residents from the surrounding Trees Estate, classed as a deprived area, are intended to be among those who take advantage of the lessons on offer.

It will make up for the lack of a community building on the estate.

Up to 25 people a time would be able to learn in a large open training area and a separate IT suite.

An interview room for up to three people and community offices for three NHS-funded health trainers will also be provided.

Activities will take place from 8.30am to 9pm on weekdays and 11am to 4pm on occasional weekends and bank holidays.

Groups such as the Trees Estate Residents' Association will be able to use the rooms. They will also be available for the likes of Citizens' Advice Bureau and the tax and pensions service.
