Hearty thanks as riders raisecash for charity

FAST cars were replaced with cyclists at Goodwood when hundreds of fundraisers took to the track to raise cash for the British Heart Foundation.

Around 380 cyclists between the ages of two and 80 completed more than 3,100 laps '“ 7,400 miles '“ with one determined enthusiast covered over 100 miles on the day, with others not far behind.

'We had more riders than ever before,' said Jane Ramage, chairman of the local BHF fundraising branch, 'especially families.

'It's great to see the same cyclists year after year, and to welcome newcomers. The event raised over 7,000 last year, so we hope to do a little better from sponsorship this year '“ but it's just as important to give people a chance to get out in the fresh air for some healthy exercise. '

'The event is our major fund-raiser of the year,' added Jane, ' and it's only possible because of the help we get from volunteers to run it on the day '“ we're also really grateful to Goodwood Motor Circuit and the marshals, and the Red Cross who provide First Aid cover, and to Spokes Cycles from Littlehampton, who covered running repairs for the bikes during the day.

'I'd like to thank everyone who helped, especially the scout group from Yapton, and the volunteers from the local heart support groups.'

This year's participants included many cyclists with very personal reason to support the BHF, including five-year-old Connor Duhig from Kent has been receiving treatment since he was only two weeks old.
