FAMOUS international ice skater and star of TV’s Dancing on Ice, Jayne Torvill is to become the patron of an East Sussex fostering charity.

East Sussex Foster Care Association (ESFCA) is a local independent charity serving the needs of foster carers, their families and the children who are placed in their care by the local authority.

It said this week that it was delighted that the Olympic gold medallist had agreed to be its patron.

Chair of the charity, Fred Livings said; “We are absolutely thrilled to have Jayne’s support. This appointment has come at an important stage in the charity’s development as we need to raise our profile, the public’s awareness of fostering and a much needed boost to our funds. Jayne has indicated her readiness to become an active patron and we are really looking forward to her attending some of the activities we have planned. By working together with Jayne we will make a big difference to the lives of fostered children.”

Commenting on her appointment as patron Jayne said: “I feel passionate about making a positive difference to the lives of children. The chance to work with a local charity that offers opportunities to move children forward in their lives is incredibly important. I am looking forward to contributing to their experiences and helping to create special memories.”

The main aim of the ESFCA is to facilitate life changing experiences for fostered children and build brighter futures. In recent years this has included taking children to the X Factor tour in Brighton (including backstage meetings with the stars of the show.) As well children are regularly taken for adventure weekends at PGL camps, pantomime trips and Christmas parties.

To address the needs of foster carers and families, conferences are held to build on their professional practice which is critical in helping children to move forward in their lives. The charity also tries to mark the contribution made by the birth/adopted children of foster carers in welcoming foster children into their home. Recent events have included a day at Knockhatch adventure park.
