HEATHFIELD CHAPEL: We welcome you to our Chapel services when our speaker on Sunday both morning (11am) and evening (6.30pm) is expected to be Rev John Billett from Marlow, Bucks. On July 3, Rev N Barnett is our speaker at 11am (to include Communion) with Paul Daniels taking the evening services at 6.30pm throughout July.

HISTORY SOCIETY: Isambard Kingdom Brunel, one of the greatest engineers in our history, was the subject of the recent lecture given to the members by Mr G Albon. Brunel declared that he saw no problems only solutions, a comment which his life’s work exemplified. His early work included a tunnel, which still exists, under the Thames but it is with Bristol, the Great Western Railway and the West Country with which he is most associated. In the 1830’s he obtained government permission to build a railway from London to Bristol and so The Great Western Railway was born. It was not an easy route to survey and in solving the problems it threw at him he produced his most iconic work. Starting with Paddington Station which he called ‘a conservatory in a cutting’ his route included viaducts and bridges all of which were unique including The Box Tunnel and The Clifton Suspension Bridge. Mr Albon finished his talk with an explanation of his famous ships, the Great Western, The Great Eastern and The Great Britain, important in the transition from sail to steam.

The society next meets in September but before then the members will enjoy their annual outing, this year to Penshurst Place.

DECORATIVE AND FINE ARTS SOCIETY: In the final lecture of the current programme Maggie Campbell Pedersen spoke on Organic Gem Materials in the Decorative Arts. We learned that Organic Gem Materials are anything that can be used for decorative purposes and which have at some time been produced by a living organism. Maggie demonstrated this to the members with pictures ranging from primitive necklaces of seeds, shells and teeth and head-dresses of feathers to highly sophisticated jewellery made from amber, coral, jet, ivory, tortoiseshell and pearls. She described the origins of the materials, showed us how they are worked and how to conserve them. She left us with the knowledge that we probably all own something which started its life as a living organism and that things don’t have to be incredibly expensive to be absolutely beautiful.

The society now has a summer break and the new season of lectures will begin in September.
