CROSS IN HAND WI: At our last meeting on March 23, members were treated to a very interesting and informative talk entitled Wonderful World of Water by Jo Osborn. Jo works for South East Water and gave us an insight into how our water supplies are sourced, processed and piped to our homes ready for drinking. The talk contained many fascinating facts such as only 3 percent of the water supplied to a typical household is actually used for drinking whereas 30 Percent is used to flush the toilet. We were all given goodie bags and helpful tips on how to use water wisely. Birthday flowers were presented to Barbara Edwards, Muriel Campbell and Pauline Kent and the Flower of the Month competition was won by Betty Dabson.

NEW BENEFICE: For some time the Diocese of Chichester have been considering the bringing together of the parish of Old Heathfield and the Parish of Heathfield under the one name of the Benefice of Heathfield. It simply means a coming together under one name of the two parishes which include All Saints’ Church, Old Heathfield, St George’s Church, Broad Oak and St Richard’s Church, Heathfield. With the formation of this new Benefice there have been some changes of parish boundaries and these have reflected the more natural flow of where people. With the retirement of Rev Malcolm Jones from St Richard’s at the end of October in 2015 and the move of the Rev David Guest to South East London this new formation has taken place. It also means that a new Vicar of Heathfield will be appointed during the coming months who will work across the whole Benefice of Heathfield.

Over the past few years, these three churches have seen themselves working together on projects which have included Showstopper, the Broad Oak and Heathfield Summer Festival and coming up this year they are working as a partnership with the Broad Oak Village Hall Committee in staging another Summer Festival and also celebrating the Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebration on June 11, all culminating with a Barn Dance in the evening and the lighting of a Beacon later in the evening. This all means that there is much to celebrate as these three churches come together and this coming Sunday, the Bishop of Lewes, Bishop Richard will celebrate Holy Communion with the united church and pray for them in the formation of the new Benefice. The service commences at 10.30am at All Saints’ Church, Old Heathfield.
