Help homeless people keep warm at winter by donating some socks

Richard Stevens' annual Sock Appeal for the local charity, Surviving Christmas has got off to a good start but more pairs of new, warm socks are still very much needed he says.

The Appeal, now in its twenty second year, asks people to donate a pair or two of warm socks which are then distributed to the homeless or those living in cold conditions.

More socks are being requested this year because it has been decided that they can be distributed throughout the winter and not simply at Christmas-time.

Surviving Christmas provides festive hospitality, warmth, clothing and other essential services from its centre in The Salvation Army Hall, St. Andrew’s Square on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. It also distributes Christmas parcels to those in need.

Also involved in the distribution work are other charities who have an established record of helping the homeless and those living on the streets or in cold conditions, such as St John Ambulance, The Seaview Project and Snowflake.

Richard Stevens has made special ‘Sox-Boxes’ available for people to leave their donated socks.

These are located at His Place Community Church in Robertson Street, Imagen Gallery in Claremont, The Contact Centre, at the side of the Town Hall, and in the History House at Courthouse Street in the Old Town.

Renewing his appeal, Richard said: “As we approach Christmas, I am asking people to give a thought for those less fortunate than themselves.

“ New, warm socks really can make such a big difference and I know that any donations will go to those in genuine need.”

The Sock Appeal will continue right up until Christmas Eve.’

Surviving Christmas has been busy in recent weeks with its hamper appeal.

Sussex Coast College has played a role in donating and local firm Hastings Direct has also made a donation and is playing a role in helping with hamper packing and deliveries in the run up to Christmas.
