Help promote cancer group over the web

Cancer United offers help for those whose lives have been affected by cancer, whether patients or their family or friends.

The organisation had a shop in Wick Street, Wick, which has now closed.

However, it is branching out and is offering an online store to raise cash to pay for its cancer support network.

Now the group’s director, Jan Sheward, is appealing for someone step forward and volunteer as its online retail and social media co-ordinator.

She said: “From the minute you’re told you have cancer, your life changes. We’re there to help people feel normal again. As well as providing a place to share information, so our members may benefit from peer-to-peer support and get help and advice about treatment options and coping with treatment, our main mission is to help people focus positively on moving forward with their lives, while offering a variety of complimentary therapies and fun activities.”

The opportunity is home-based but volunteers will be required to travel to Ford.

The role would involve the co-ordinator updating and monitoring the online store, managing its ‘eBay for charity’ account, as well as all the organisation’s social networking sites.

Applicants should be IT-literate and experienced in using social media.

They would also need good communication skills, to be highly motivated and have an ability to work independently.

Volunteers would also help Cancer United promote new fund-raising schemes online.

Jan added: “On a more personal level, a volunteer can benefit from the knowledge they are contributing to a cause that helps people affected by this terrible life-threatening illness.”

Enable Me, a charity which helps disabled young people, is appealing for a new youth club assistant.

The volunteer would help children and young people at the club, based at the Flintstone Centre, in East Street. It runs on Mondays, from 4-6pm and Thursdays 6-8pm. Training will be given.

The charity is also appealing for someone to help deliver disability awareness workshops in schools and workplaces.

The role would suit someone with an inspirational story to tell who feels comfortable working with children and presenting.
